If the sky is bluer and bluer, our tables are greener and greener: of salads. Lettuce and chicory now go with all our lunches and dinners: a legacy handed down from the dietary habits of our parents and grandparents, who knew the value and the nutritional properties of this food well, which is a real panacea for our bodies. If you don't know them yet, let's find out together why eating salad is often good for our bodies (and not only):
- 1. Full of fibres Salads with lettuce, rocket and other green vegetables are rich in fibres and contain very little fat: a real aid in the fight against cholesterol and an extra ally against constipation. In addition, the absorption of fibres induces a sense of satiety, in this way you eat less and don’t risk gaining weight.
- 2. Blissful antioxidants Green salads contain strong antioxidants: Vitamins E and C, folic acid, lycopene, alpha and beta carotene. If these names don't ring a bell, know that they are essential to protect the body’s organism and to fight cellular ageing and blood circulation.
- 3. The power of vitamins Salad is an important source of vitamins: it contains vitamin C, A, which is good for night vision and for the skin, vitamin K for bones, and flavonoids for cancer prevention. Furthermore, eating salad allows you to fill up on potassium, calcium and phosphorus. And if you want your body’s organism to absorb more vitamins, use olive oil to dress your salad: according to recent studies, the monounsaturated fats of oil facilitate the intake of vitamins compared to other dressings such as butter and corn oil.
- 4. Against stress and migraines If you suffer from insomnia or headaches, lettuce is a food that works also as a sedative. Indeed, its leaves contain a substance called lectucarium, which works wonderfully to alleviate these problems. Reminding also that magnesium and vitamin B6 are a tonic for our nervous system and act against anxiety and stress.
